Writer, editor, and creator. The longer version of the story.
Brendan Clarey is a writer, editor, and digital storyteller with years of experience creating content that gets attention.
Hailing from a small town in Southwest Michigan, Brendan studied film and video in high school. He attended Hillsdale College, where he majored in English and minored in journalism. Internships took him to Washington, D.C. and New York City. He learned by working with the best.
After his time at USA Today, Clarey came back to Michigan and worked as opinion editor at The Detroit News for several years. He then worked as the sole employee of Chalkboard News, earning him a reputation as a dogged education reporter and editor.
Alongside reporting and editing, he's created world-class content marketing for Pago USA, which helps small towns in the Midwest revitalize themselves. Clarey also has experience in traditional copywriting based on standard briefs from creative agencies.
In early 2025, Clarey left his K-12 reporting beat to start as deputy editor of Michigan Enjoyer where he oversees the day-to-day editing and workflow of content. He creates and edits social media videos with an eye for virality and brand cohesion, matching the content to the written word and photography.
He is available for freelance assignments, both writing and editing for journalism and content marketing. He's passionate about living with enthusiasm and loves to work with people. He creates teams and friendships wherever he goes. If you value creativity, honesty and getting the work done right the first time, get in touch.
